Our story
The Guitar Room has its origins in a small guitar building school Thomas Lloyd Guitars founded in1993 by luthier Chris Wynne. Teaching people to build handcrafted acoustic guitars, TLG’s first school began in a quaint horse stable in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Quickly the thriving business outgrew its humble beginnings and moved to the famous Montsalvat artist colony in Eltham.
For the next seventeen years TLG ran guitar building classes both here and in Italy, France and Japan. Over this time we proudly gained a world renowned reputation for quality instruction while using the best of Australian tone woods.
In 2014, Rod McCracken joined TLG as a student and has been building guitars here ever since. In June of2018 he grabbed the opportunity to buy the business and is now proud to bring Thomas Lloyd Guitars back to its heritage roots.
By establishing The Guitar Room in Kilmore, Victoria’s oldest inland town, Rod has moved the business into a new era while continuing the practice of teaching artisan guitar building.
Kilmore, offers stunning gold rush era architecture and a heritage atmosphere amongst a vibrant regional community. Our beautiful little town is situated in the rolling hills of central Victoria and an easy hour drive from Melbourne.
The Guitar Room is the perfect place to learn an extraordinary, centuries old craft, and bring to life a guitar of your own that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
